LEC Staff Honors Washington with a Dessert

We briefly discussed some interesting anecdotes about some of our presidents today in honor of Presidents' Day yesterday.  Among them, this: Silent Cal (Coolidge) and how he came to be known by that name (Two people attending a state dinner made a wager that the one could make him say "more than 2 words" and Silent Cal's reply was: "You lose!").

We also discussed the legend of Washington and the Cherry Tree and debunked the myth along with why such presidents as he (along with Jefferson, Lincoln, and etc) should be venerated.

In the course of this talk, I mentioned to the students about the tradition of the cherry and Presidents' Day and, at least to me, how these two things are inextricably tied together.

Among my memories were these cherry lollipop treats from my childhood.  These "old fashioned" candies were sold at my grandfather's store (later my Uncle Bobby Haas ran the store: Haas' Store at 5th and Coal, Lehighton).

The most fortunate part of this story, and the reason for this post, is to celebrate our thoughtful and hard-working cafeteria staff here at the Lehighton Elementary Center.

As you can imagine how pleased I was when our students entered the Cafe and found, among their choices of dessert today, a home-made cherry-cobbler, created by Mrs. Kelly Koehler and Mrs. Mona Lorah.

I was so please that our staff helped reinforce such an important, long-running tradition!
